Datuk Kamaruddin Taib
Chairman & Independent Non-executive Director
Datuk Kamaruddin Taib was appointed as Independent Non-Executive Director and Chairman of Malaysian Life Reinsurance Group Berhad on 20 February 2023.
He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from the University of Salford, United Kingdom.
Datuk Kamaruddin has extensive experience in investment banking, corporate finance, and mergers and acquisitions. He began his career in 1980 with a leading investment bank in Malaysia, and has since held directorships in numerous private and public listed companies. He has been involved in the listing of several companies on Bursa Malaysia and has served on the boards of companies listed on international exchanges, including in India and on Nasdaq.
He currently serves as Independent Non-Executive Chairman of HSBC Bank Malaysia Berhad and RAM Holdings Berhad, Chairman of FIDE Forum, and as a Director of Fraser & Neave Holdings Berhad and Malaysia Smelting Corporation Berhad.
As Chairman of the Board, Datuk Kamaruddin provides leadership to the Board and promotes effective governance, strategic oversight and Board effectiveness.

Ariff Rozhan
Independent Non-Executive Director
En. Ariff Rozhan was appointed to the Board as an Independent Non-Executive Director on 1 September 2025. He is an advocate and solicitor of the High Court of Malaya and a practising Barrister-at-Law in England & Wales, with over 35 years of legal experience. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and has been on the AIAC Panel of Arbitrators since 2021.
En. Ariff began his legal career in London in 1989 and practised as a Barrister in Temple, London until 2004. Upon returning to Malaysia, he joined Zaid Ibrahim & Co as Partner and Head of Dispute Resolution, and was also on the firm’s Executive Committee. In 2015, he founded Ariff Rozhan & Co (ARC), where he is currently the Managing Partner. ARC represents a wide range of Malaysian and international clients, including banks, statutory bodies, corporations, and high net worth individuals.
He continues to practise in London through the Chambers of Ariff Rozhan and is authorised by the Bar Council of England & Wales to conduct litigation and accept Direct Access instructions. Mr. Ariff has also served on the boards of Pan Malaysia Corporation Berhad (2006–2023) and Bank Pembangunan Malaysia Berhad (2019–2023), and is currently a director of Tune Protect Group Berhad.

Dato Koh Yaw Hui
Non-Independent Non-Executive Director
Dato Koh Yaw Hui was appointed to the Board of Malaysian Life Reinsurance Group Berhad on 1 January 2020.
He currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Great Eastern Life Assurance (Malaysia) Berhad, a role he has held since January 2008. With over 20 years of experience in the insurance industry, he is responsible for the overall strategic direction and business growth of the organisation.
Dato Koh also serves on the boards of several companies, including L.I.A.M Holdings Sdn. Bhd. and L.I.A.M Property Sdn. Bhd.
He holds a Bachelor of Social Science (Hons) in Economics from Universiti Sains Malaysia, and is a Fellow of the Life Management Institute (USA) as well as a Registered Financial Planner.
Dato Koh currently serves as Chairman of the Investment Committee, where he provides leadership in overseeing the Company's investment strategy and investment governance framework.

Tan Kay How
Non-Independent Non-Executive Director
Mr Tan Kay How was appointed as Non-Independent Non-Executive Director of Malaysian Life Reinsurance Group Berhad on 24 August 2023.
He holds a Bachelor's degree in Actuarial Science from the National University of Malaysia and is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA) and a CFA Charterholder.
Mr Tan currently serves as Chief Operating Officer, Southeast Asia Markets, at Reinsurance Group of America (RGA). He also serves as RGA's management representative to the Shariah Advisory Council. Since joining RGA in January 2016, he has been based at the Labuan Branch's co-located office in Kuala Lumpur.
With more than 20 years of experience in the insurance industry, Mr Tan has held leadership roles across multiple markets in Southeast Asia, including Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, and China. His experience spans life, health, group, general insurance, and takaful businesses, providing him with a broad perspective of the region's insurance landscape.

Tan Lye Sim
Independent Non-Executive Director
Ms. Tan Lye Sim was appointed to the Board of Malaysian Life Reinsurance Group Berhad on 1 April 2021 and currently serves as Chairman of the Risk Management Committee.
She is an accomplished risk management professional with more than 30 years of experience across financial institutions, securities firms, merchant banks, commercial banks, and finance companies.
Ms. Tan has held various senior leadership positions in risk management, including Head of Treasury Compliance at RHB Bank Berhad, Group Chief Risk Officer at Alliance Financial Group and Hong Leong Bank, Director and Head of Operational Risk Management at CIMB Investment Bank, and Group Chief Risk Officer at Kenanga Investment Bank Berhad. Throughout her career, she has been instrumental in developing enterprise-wide risk management frameworks, policies, processes, and systems to strengthen organisational resilience and governance.
In addition to her executive experience, Ms. Tan served on the Board of Bank Pembangunan Malaysia Berhad from 2018 to 2020, where she chaired the Group Risk Management Committee. She also served as an Independent Non-Executive Director of GHL Systems Berhad from 2021 to 2024, further strengthening her experience in board governance, risk oversight, and regulatory compliance.
Ms. Tan is a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (FCCA). As Chairman of the Risk Management Committee, she provides leadership in overseeing the Company's risk governance framework, risk appetite, and emerging risk landscape, ensuring risks are effectively identified, monitored, and managed in support of the Company's strategic objectives.

Ahmad Subri bin Abdullah
Independent Director
En. Ahmad Subri bin Abdullah was appointed to the Board of Malaysian Life Reinsurance Group Berhad on 10 November 2017 and currently serves as Chairman of the Audit Committee and the Nomination and Remuneration Committee.
He brings over 30 years of experience in the financial services industry, including almost 20 years as Chief Executive Officer of various insurance companies, namely Amanah Insurance Berhad, Malaysia Cooperative Insurance Society Berhad, Mayban Life Assurance Berhad, and Malaysia National Insurance Berhad. He also served as Chairman of the General Insurance Association of Malaysia and the Insurance Mediation Bureau of Malaysia.
En. Subri qualified as a Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute, United Kingdom, and is a Fellow of the Malaysian Insurance Institute. Prior to returning to Malaysia in 1980, he underwent professional training and worked in London for more than seven years.
He currently serves on the boards of several private and public companies in Malaysia and Singapore, and provides valuable leadership and oversight on matters relating to audit, governance, board succession, and remuneration.

Prof. Dr. Said Bouheraoua

Prof. Dr. Said Bouheraoua was appointed as Chairman of the Shariah Advisory Board on 23 May 2023. He currently serves as Director of the Centre of Excellence of Applied Shariah in Economics and Finance (CASHiEF) at INCEIF University, Malaysia, where he leads research and thought leadership initiatives in Islamic finance.
He holds several key advisory and governance roles, serving on Shariah boards across financial institutions and regulatory bodies internationally, including the Central Bank of Oman and SunTrust Bank Nigeria.
Prof. Dr. Said is a recognised scholar in Islamic finance, with extensive publications, research projects, and thought leadership contributions. He has been actively involved in advancing industry initiatives, including contributions to Shariah standards and sustainable finance, and is a frequent speaker at leading international platforms such as the International Fiqh Academy of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). He also delivers training programmes in Islamic law and finance globally.
He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Fiqh and Usul al-Fiqh from the University of Algiers, and both a Master’s degree and PhD in the same field from the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). He also holds a Diploma in Human Sciences.

Prof. Dr. Mushaddad Hasbullah

Professor Dr. Mushaddad was appointed as a member of the Shariah Advisory Board on 23 May 2023. He is currently Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) at Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM), where he provides strategic leadership in student development, engagement, and alumni relations.
Prior to his appointment as Deputy Vice-Chancellor, he served as an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Shariah and Law at USIM. He has also held key leadership positions within the university, including Director of the Centre for Waqf and Zakat (PWZ), contributing significantly to the development of academic programmes, policy frameworks, and research in Islamic Family Law, Faraid, and Islamic estate management. He also served as the former Dean of the Faculty of Shariah and Law, Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM).
He is actively involved in Shariah advisory work and currently serves as Chairman of the Shariah Committee of Co-opbank Pertama. He is also the current Chairman of the Shariah Committee of Citibank, former Chairman of the Shariah Committee of Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC), and former Member of the Shariah Committee of Swiss Re Takaful. He is a Certified Shariah Advisor (CSA) certificate holder.
He has authored numerous papers in Islamic law and Islamic finance and is a frequent contributor to national and international forums. His contributions have been recognised through innovation awards as well as state honours from Kelantan and Negeri Sembilan.
Professor Dr. Mushaddad holds a Bachelor’s degree in Shariah Islamiyyah from the Islamic University of Madinah, and both a Master’s degree and PhD in Fiqh and Usul al-Fiqh from the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM).

Dr. Muhammad Syahmi Mohd Karim

Dr. Muhammad Syahmi Mohd Karim was appointed as a member of the Shariah Advisory Board on 23 May 2023. He is a seasoned Islamic finance, business and governance leader with over 25 years of experience across central banking, multilateral development institutions, consulting, and higher education, and is recognised for his expertise in Islamic finance, sustainable finance, ESG, and strategic leadership.
He currently serves as a Member of the Tribunal at the Competition Appeal Tribunal, Government of Malaysia, and as a member of the Shariah Committees of EXIM Bank and HSBC Amanah Malaysia.
Dr. Syahmi has held several senior leadership and advisory roles across the public and private sectors. He began his career at Bank Negara Malaysia, where he held roles in banking supervision and risk management, including Head of Shariah Risk within the Specialist Risk Unit. Building on this foundation, he has held key positions including Deputy President (Operations) / Chief Operating Officer at INCEIF University, Deputy CEO at ISRA Consulting, and Global Lead Islamic Finance Specialist at the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), where he led international advisory and technical engagements. He has also led collaborative initiatives with global institutions such as the World Bank, International Monetary Fund (IMF), and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
He has served on various boards and committees across government, financial institutions, and government-linked entities, and has also served as an External Expert to the International Monetary Fund, advising central banks on regulatory frameworks, Shariah governance, and Islamic finance ecosystem development.
Dr. Syahmi holds a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, a Master’s in Islamic Finance, and a Certificate in Islamic Law from the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). He also holds a PhD in Islamic Banking and Finance from Durham University, United Kingdom.
He is a Chartered Accountant (CA(M)) with the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA) and a Chartered Global Management Accountant (ACMA, CGMA), and is a member of the Institute of Corporate Directors Malaysia (ICDM) Association of Shariah Advisors in Islamic Finance (ASAS).

Aminuddin Abu Bakar

Mr. Aminuddin was appointed as a member of the Shariah Advisory Board on 1 April 2025. He brings nearly 20 years of experience across Shariah, Islamic finance, and socio-religious development.
He is currently the Managing Director of El Madkhal Sdn. Bhd. and Principal Consultant at S Tradition Pte. Ltd., an Islamic advisory firm based in Singapore. He also serves as a Board member of PIH Investment Holding Pte. Ltd. and Director of ALG Academy Pte. Ltd. (Singapore).
Mr. Aminuddin presently serves as Chairman for the Shariah Committee of HSBC Amanah Malaysia and serves on the Shariah Committees of Financial Shariah Advisory & Consultancy (FSAC) Singapore; as well as a Shariah Committee member for IFSG and Hugosave in Singapore.
He has held senior positions within the Islamic banking industry, including Vice President and Head of the Shariah Division at Kuwait Finance House Malaysia, where he was part of the senior management team and contributed to major corporate, treasury, and sukuk transactions.
Mr. Aminuddin holds an Honours Bachelor’s degree in Shariah Islamiyyah from Al-Azhar University, Cairo, and a Master of Business Administration (with distinction) from the University of Strathclyde, United Kingdom. He is a Certified Shariah Advisor and Auditor (CSAA) by AAOIFI, a Certified Shariah Advisor (CSA) by the Association of Shariah Advisors in Islamic Finance (ASAS), and a registered Shariah Advisor with the Securities Commission Malaysia.

Patrick Cheah
President & Chief Executive Officer
Patrick Cheah is the President & Chief Executive Officer of Malaysian Life Reinsurance Group Berhad (ML Re), bringing nearly 30 years of experience across the insurance and financial services industry, including life insurance, family takaful, general insurance, and banking. A qualified actuary, he is a Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (UK) and a past President of the Actuarial Society of Malaysia.
He has built extensive international experience across Europe and Asia, and has held senior leadership roles spanning the insurance value chain, including Appointed Actuary, Chief Financial Officer, Chief Marketing Officer, Chief Operating Officer, and Head of Bancassurance. Prior to joining ML Re, he was the Actuarial Practice Leader at PwC Malaysia, where he played a key role in developing and strengthening the firm’s actuarial capabilities.
At ML Re, Patrick has led the organisation’s strategic transformation, including the successful acquisition of a retakaful licence, strengthening support for the domestic family takaful market, and reinforcing ML Re’s position as a leading life reinsurer.

Nurul Sheila Khalib
Chief Retakaful Officer
Nurul Sheila Khalib is the Chief Retakaful Officer of Malaysian Life Reinsurance Group Berhad (ML Re), where she leads the development and growth of the Company’s retakaful business. She brings over two decades of experience across the takaful and insurance industry, with expertise spanning product development, distribution strategy, business growth, and market expansion.
She has held senior roles across the takaful and insurance sector, with leadership experience covering product, marketing, and distribution, as well as broader responsibilities in business strategy, customer value proposition, and organisational transformation. In these roles, she has contributed to new business growth, strengthened customer value propositions, and supported initiatives to enhance financial inclusion and market reach.
At ML Re, Nurul Sheila is responsible for scaling the newly established retakaful business, strengthening client partnerships, and enhancing operational capabilities in line with Shariah and regulatory requirements.
She holds a Bachelor of Science in Actuarial Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, is a Chartered Professional in Islamic Finance (CPIF), and a Fellow of the Asian Institute of Insurance (FAii).

Liew Min Liang
Chief Financial Officer
Dr. Liew Min Liang is the Chief Financial Officer of Malaysian Life Reinsurance Group Berhad (ML Re), where he oversees the Company’s finance, actuarial, and corporate functions, including capital management, financial operations and reporting, investment, actuarial pricing, data analytics, and operational support. He is a finance, actuarial, and risk professional with extensive international experience across the insurance and reinsurance industry.
Prior to joining ML Re, Dr. Liew held senior leadership roles at a global reinsurance group, where he led regional valuation, actuarial support, and risk management functions across Asia, the Middle East and Africa, supporting business units in Southeast Asia, China, India, Japan, Korea, Dubai, and South Africa. He also held leadership roles in enterprise risk management and actuarial functions within leading insurance institutions, contributing to key initiatives in enterprise risk management, economic capital, and model governance.
Dr. Liew brings deep expertise in actuarial science, risk management, investment, and finance, with a strong track record in leading transformation initiatives, strengthening financial governance, and driving data-informed decision-making. He is also actively involved in academia, serving as a lecturer at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, where he contributes to the development of actuarial and risk management talent.
He is a Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (UK) and holds multiple professional qualifications across finance, investment, risk, and life insurance, including FCCA, CGMA, ACMA, CTP, CIA, CFA, CAIA, FRM, CERA, FLMI, and ARA. Dr. Liew holds a Doctor of Business Administration from Heriot-Watt University, a Global MBA from Queen Mary University of London, and a Master of Science in Actuarial Management from City, University of London.

Jayna Khoo
Chief Operations Officer
Jayna Khoo is the Chief Operations Officer of Malaysian Life Reinsurance Group Berhad (ML Re), where she leads operational strategy to enhance efficiency, strengthen processes, and deliver business objectives. She plays a key role in aligning operational capabilities with strategic priorities, enabling scalable growth and innovation across the organization.
Jayna brings deep expertise in insurance operations, with extensive exposure across underwriting (UW) and claims functions, as well as compliance screening and transformation initiatives across Asia, including senior roles in Hong Kong and Singapore. She has led large-scale operations of over 200 professionals, consistently driving operational excellence, strong governance, and regulatory compliance in complex and highly regulated environments.
A seasoned business process architect, Jayna has partnered with leading multinational organizations to deliver large-scale process reengineering and sustainable efficiency gains. She combines strong insurance domain knowledge with a solid IT background, specializing in technology framework design and implementation to enable scalable, future-ready operating models. She leverages advanced digital capabilities—including predictive analytics and generative AI—to optimize underwriting and claims processes, enhance decision-making, and improve service delivery.
Prior to ML Re, Jayna held senior leadership roles at AIA, where she led claims strategy in Hong Kong, driving digitalization and customer journey transformation. She also held regional responsibilities across underwriting and claims, strengthening governance, performance, and consistency across markets. Earlier in her career, she built high-performing teams across the insurance and technology sectors, delivering streamlined, customer-centric solutions aligned with diverse regulatory frameworks.
